Cultivating more sustainable joy is the practice of yoga. I don’t mean happiness. I mean joy. Joy is not determined by external circumstances. Joy is a choice. It is an attitude. It is a belief that we are held by something greater than ourselves. Cheers to more joy in 2020.

For me it’s the belief that in the end love always wins. Without it I don’t know if I could continue to move forward in a world where there is so much suffering. It’s similar to hope. But, faith brings us into the present moment and asks us to surrender...right here, right now. I believe that a spiritual practice is mandatory for personal evolution. And it is necessary for any movement of social change to be sustainable.

Sometimes it can feel like there is nothing we can do to make our life better. Life can feel overwhelming. There is loss. There is pain. There is adversity. And there is hope. This year empower yourself to believe that you have a choice and then choose hope. As challenges arise see them as an opportunity to grow. Break it down into small, actionable steps. Take the next step. Just one step. Then do that again tomorrow.

This is how I thank my body. By aligning my daily choices up with how I want to feel and who I want to be. Nourishing my body first has freed up so much space to find clarity and purpose. To contribute to the whole. To have a bigger impact on the world around me. Because I feel open and expansive. I feel energized rather than depleted. Grateful rather than resentful.

Intellectually I knew what the benefits of a gratitude practice were. I studied Positive Psychology and I learned about it in several yoga trainings that I had attended over the years. But, it wasn’t until I experienced it that I really believed it.

In the face of this tension you can choose to alleviate the tension by going the other direction, walking away from the growth path. In other words, you can choose to stay stuck in your old patterns of behavior that keep you where we are. Or you can move forward in the direction of growth. Which direction will you choose?

All of this empowers us to change...so that we experience less suffering. Yoga offers us the resources to look at our shadow (those parts of us that are unconscious), to investigate the ways in which our lived experiences have impacted us and clouded the lens by which we see the world. Why? Because what we don’t transform we transmit. Because when we take the steps necessary to heal ourselves, we heal the world.

When the crown chakra is balanced we have the ability to perceive, analyze and assimilate information. We are open-minded and able to question our beliefs. We are connected to spirit. A balanced 7th chakra allows us to feel fulfilled and on purpose, as if we are living as our truest, highest self. It is a sense of bliss.

When the third eye chakra is balanced we feel intellectually present. We are focused and have a clear vision of what we want our life to be like. Our imagination guides us and we can tune into our intuition...and trust it. We have the ability to think clearly, trust our inner wisdom and have a healthy detachment from worldly goods. We can see beyond the material world.

When the throat chakra is balanced we are able to speak our truth and can express ourselves appropriately. We are confident enough in our beliefs that we can share them unapologetically. We are more apt to create the life that we desire, on that is on purpose.
