THIS is the reason I teach yoga. This is the reason why I train teachers to teach with a trauma-informed perspective and understand how trauma lives in the body. So that those who have experienced oppression and trauma have tools and those that have the capacity and the privilege to disrupt the systems of oppression can do so effectively.

Getting pregnant and then giving birth was scary because of the lack of control I would have. I am not sure there is a place where I have ever been more vulnerable than the day I gave birth to my sweet Luisa. When I started feeling contractions I was so afraid. I was only 33 weeks pregnant and up in the mountains with my partner for a little babymoon. My biggest fear was that there was something wrong with her. After two miscarriages I was hypersensitive to anything that didn’t seem ‘normal’.

I have compiled a list of postures that are especially beneficial during pregnancy. Of, course there are many other postures that may feel good, these are just a few that I found to be helpful in relieving the common ailments during my own pregnancy.

Participating in a prenatal yoga class brought something that being in a regular public class couldn’t. A sense of ease that the instructor knew how to keep me safe as I moved through the postures and that the sequence she created was safe for the pregnant body. There was 100% permission and encouragement to truly listen to my body and absolutely no pressure to try to move into any asana that didn’t feel right for my body in that moment. It is also a special space for mamas to connect with one another and share their experiences.

In the end, I want my yoga to help me grow. So, I continue to reflect on my intentions every time I step onto my mat. To love, accept, and celebrate the best of who I am so that I may become a catalyst for change.

Conscious activism has an informed focus with integrity that acts from the heart. Through it we are creating focused intention to bring about conscious and responsible global change through community-driven action. It empowers and engages people to collaborate in creating sustainable “win-win” situations. I am delighted to bring the OTM experience to my community through the Yoga In Action workshop and to continue collaborating with others who feel passionately about bringing balance to our world.
